Final major surgery for Dubuque's Lance Cpl. Billmyer

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The father of injured marine Lance Cpl. Christopher Billmyer said Tuesday his son is undergoing his last major surgery.

Billmyer's father Jim Billmyer is with his son at the military hospital in Bethesda, Md. He said his son is undergoing what doctors expect to be an 8-9 hour surgery, performed on his son's arm.

Billmyer said if all goes well, his son may be moved to a rehabilitation center by mid- to late-December.

On Wednesday, the Dubuque Fighting Saints junior hockey team is having a fundraising home game for the marine. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to Billmyer, as well as money from an auction.

Jim Billmyer also said Champps Americana in Dubuque will be holding a fundraiser for his son on Dec. 7.

Lance Cpl. Billmyer was hit by an IED on Oct. 23, in Afghanistan. Field medics had to amputate both of his legs.

On Oct. 30, the military awarded him the Purple Heart in a bedside ceremony at the military hospital in Maryland, where he is recovering.
