Death rates continue to drop from congenital heart defects

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The death rate from congenital heart defects among Americans continues to drop, down nearly a quarter from 1999 to 2006.

Congenital heart defects, which are present at birth, can lead to an increased risk for irregular heartbeats, congestive heart failure and high blood pressure.

According to researchers from the CDC, infants accounted for nearly half of the deaths from congenital defects and African Americans had the highest death rates of any race.

The biggest declines in death rates were among white Americans.
