AMES (KWWL) -- Iowa State's Melvin Ejim averaged 18.0 points and shot 76.2 percent from the field in two Cyclone wins during the week to help him earn a share of Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors, announced Monday by the league office.
Ejim, a 6-6 freshman forward from Toronto, Ontario, is the second consecutive Cyclone to win the award. Darion "Jake" Anderson was tabbed the Big 12's first rookie of the week last Monday.
Ejim began the week scoring 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field in Iowa State's 91-43 win against Drake. He followed that game with a career-high 22-point performance against Creighton to aid the Cyclones to a 91-88 victory at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Ejim scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half, including two huge 3-pointers to help the Cyclones overcome a 12-point second-half deficit.
Ejim, who is third in the Big 12 in field goal percentage (68.6 percent), has scored in double figures in his first four games of his career. He is second on the team in scoring at 15.3 ppg.
