Ottumwa plans to remove old bridge

OTTUMWA (KWWL) -- An old bridge that stretches over the Des Moines River will be removed, because of fears that it may collapse.

Ottumwa's Public Works Director Larry Seals says the Race Street Bridge isn't safe, due to problems with the foundation and piers. He wants it demolished before ice begins to float downstream, possible causing it to fall into the river.

The city will first need to find a contractor for the project, the cost of which is unknown at this time.

The bridge dates back to the early 1900s.
