Regina shuts out North Polk for 2A title

CEDAR FALLS (AP) -- Iowa City Regina capped a perfect season with one last overpowering performance on defense.

Jack Verducci threw a 72-yard touchdown pass for the only points his team needed and the top-ranked Regals shut down North Polk 21-0 Saturday to win the Class 2A state championship.

Regina (14-0), which came in allowing just 4.1 points a game, held North Polk (11-4) to seven first downs and recorded its seventh shutout. For the season, the Regals outscored their opponents 591-53.

North Polk had a chance to avoid the shutout when it drove to the Regina 13-yard line in the fourth quarter. But the Comets' Noah Pickard fumbled and Braden Lehman recovered for Regina to end the threat.
