Family honored for military service

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- An eastern Iowa family was honored for their military service Saturday in Waterloo.

The Nielsen family was presented the Sullivan Family Award during a presentation at the Iowa Veterans Museum.

The family has four members that are currently service men.

The eldest, Tim Nielsen, is a World War II vet that just recently passed away.

They say receiving this award is humbling and that there are so many other families out there that are just as deserving.

Barnabas Nielsen says he vividly remembers the words his father left him with before he was deployed.

"One of the things I always remember in my life is he told me to serve with distinction," Barnabas said. "I mean the things he was going through at that time, he told me to live with distinction. It was one of the highlights of my life. I truly believe that."

Both Barnabas and his brother Samuel say it was their father, Tim's, example that pushed them to enlist.
