Solon defeats Heelan for 4th straight title

CEDAR FALLS (AP) -- Solon's championship streak is now unmatched in Iowa high school football.

Solon became the first school to win four consecutive state championships when it beat Sioux City Bishop Heelan 45-7 Saturday for the Class 3A title. The Spartans (13-1) won the 2A championship each of the three previous years and now own five titles overall.

Bishop Heelan (12-2) brought a 12-game winning streak to its 10th appearance in the state finals, but Solon scored two quick touchdowns late in the first quarter en route to a 24-0 halftime lead and the Crusaders never recovered.

Zach Ward scored on three 1-yard runs for Solon, while J.J. Hanus passed for one touchdown and ran for another. Paul Jacobson threw an 18-yard pass to Pat Fitzsimmons in the third quarter for Bishop Heelan's only touchdown.
