Chest pleading guilty to robbery charges

DUBUQUE (KWWL)--  A man charged with shooting a Dubuque police officer after a reported robbery at a Dubuque bar has entered a plea of guilty to first-degree robbery and entered an Alford Plea to the charge of attempted murder.

An Alford Plea does not admit guilt but acknowledges that the evidence presented against the defendant would more than likely yield a guilty verdict.

Eddie Chest is accused of shooting Lieutenant Scott Baxter in December. He was wounded after responding to a robbery at Knicker's Saloon. The Alford Plea means Chest doesn't admit guilt, but understands the evidence against him would likely result in a conviction at trial. Both offenses carry punishments up to 25 years in prison and would be served concurrently.

Officials anticipate Chest will be sentenced in about eight weeks.
