Season of giving at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The holiday season is a busy time of year and for those working at the North East Iowa Food Bank even more so.

Donations have been coming in by the truck load to help families and the holiday demand.

"What's interesting is that we've been seeing a lot of new faces coming in. People who would never thought they would need our services before. That's what we're here for. We're here to help people get through some sort of a troubled time," said Executive Director of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank Barbara Prather.

During the holiday season the food bank doesn't just stock up on the bare essentials, they also stock up on the holiday essentials.

"This time of year what we've been doing with our food drives is when people ask what they can give we focus on holiday meal type things so when people come into the pantry or agencies come in and shop, there's food available that can help them prepare holiday meals," said Prather.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank helps around 1200 families a month. There is usually a bigger demand in the summer months because kids are out of school, but there is no busier time of year for donations.

"So it's really a time of year people are in the giving spirit, but the need is still there and the need is still there all year round," said Prather.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank provides and food and other grocery products to nearly 200 qualified non profit organizations in 16 northeast Iowa counties all year long.
