Teenage drinking can lead to impulsive behavior over lifetime

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A new study suggests males who drink heavily during adolescence are prone to impulsive behavior over time.

Researchers tracked 500 boys over a 20 year period and found a significant increase in impulsive behavior when they drank heavily the previous year.

Researchers say alcohol use can significantly affect the development of the brain's pre-frontal cortex where decision making and behavior control reside.

The study did find that teens who stopped heavy drinking were able to improve their self-control over time.
