Chicago man charged in Iowa City woman's murder

Derrick Pearson Derrick Pearson

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (KWWL) -- A Chicago man who turned himself in to police is now charged with the murder of an Iowa City woman.

Derrick Pearson, 22, of Chicago, was charged Monday in the slayings of Maryrosa Russell-Green, 44, and Charles King, 28, in Russell-Green's car on Feb. 2, in Chicago.

On Tuesday, Pearson was ordered to be held in the Cook County Jail on $3 million bail.

Maryrosa Russell-Green's family said she had moved to Iowa City from Chicago to get away from the violence.  She had been back in Chicago visiting when she was shot to death.

Pearson turned himself in Monday and detectives say they identified Pearson after he left his state identification card and a mask used in the shootings in a car he borrowed as an escape vehicle.

Pearson's next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 6, in Chicago.
