Veterans proud of Staff Sergeant Giunta

MARION (KWWL) - Iowa veterans were glued to television screens everywhere, as Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, of Hiawatha was awarded the Medal of Honor.

"It makes every veteran feel proud that we have people in the military like that," said Denny Carson, who we caught up with at American Legion Post 298 in Marion. Carson went on to describe Giunta as "a very upstanding young man."

Even though Giunta is from the neighboring city of Hiawatha, Dan Palmersheim says all Iowans should be proud.

"That we have servicemen and women now that actually will do those kinds of things for service men in the country, I've got nothing but admiration for him, and appreciation," Palmersheim told us. "I think we should all be aware of what we owe people like himself."

Though Giunta is currently in the spotlight, his medal is a symbol of what all U.S. soldiers put on the line every day to keep each other and our country safe.

"We're proud to have him in our community," said Carson, "and I think that everybody who serves over there is a hero in one way or another."
