Black Hawk County Gaming Assoc. gives $5 million to Sports Plex


WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Black Hawk County Gaming Association Board of Directors is giving $5 million to the Sports Plex project.

The board met Monday night to make their awards for the Oct. 1, competitive grant cycle.

The board awarded eight projects $5,536,377 in grants.

"This quarter, a commitment to a transformational project, the Sports Plex in downtown Waterloo received a $5,000,000 commitment for funds. This is the largest award to a single project in the history of the association," BHCGA Board President Don Hoth said in a written statement.

Other projects receiving funds are:

Grout Museum District – Snowden House Roof Renovation $12,458

University of Northern Iowa – McLeod Improvements $310,000

Main Street Waterloo – Downtown Facelift Phase II $159,000

Pathways Behavioral Services– Residential Furnishings Junkman Knoebel $9,519

American Red Cross – New Vehicle for Disaster Response $35,900

Lutheran Services in Iowa – Car Seats and First Aid Kits $3,500

Consumer Credit Counseling Services of NE Iowa – Financial Literacy Program $6,000

The nonprofit BHCGA, which holds the state non-profit gaming license for the Isle Casino and Hotel in Waterloo, receives 5.75 percent of the casino's adjusted gross receipts and disburses grants for property tax relief, capital projects and charitable donations in Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, Grundy and Tama counties.

Black Hawk County Gaming Association's next funding application deadline is Jan. 4, 2011.
