Eight people evacuated after fire breaks out in Cedar Rapids apartment

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Eight people were evacuated after a fire broke out at a Cedar Rapids apartment complex on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 909 28th Street SE after Earl Gilmore, who lives in apartment #3, noticed smoke coming from under the door of apartment #2.

When fire crews arrived just before 9:45 a.m., they entered apartment #2 and found a mattress and box spring on fire in a bedroom.  Firefighters were able to contain the fire and heat damage to that bedroom.

Jerome Strong, the last person to be in the apartment before the fire broke out, was not home at the time.

Eight people, including seven adults and a baby, were evacuated from the other apartments in the complex. They were able to return to their apartments shortly after the fire was put out.  The fire department says apartment #2 is uninhabitable.

Greg Buelow, spokesperson for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says no smoke alarms went off to alert the occupants of the fire.

Buelow says the property is owned by Endless Point LLC of Las Vegas, Nevada, and is managed by M&T Property Management of Cedar Rapids.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
