Autistic handwriting problems plague children through teen years

Posted:

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND (KWWL) -- A new study found that the handwriting problems that affect children with autism are likely to continue into the teen years.

Autistic teenagers scored lower on handwriting and motor skills-tests than their peers without autism, and researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute wanted to find out why.

They discovered reasoning skills were the best predictor of handwriting performance in autistic teens.

Solutions as simple as adjusting pencil grip, taking more time to form letters or other methods that involve reasoning skills could improve handwriting quality in these teens.
