Students donate items to food bank

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- Students from eight local high schools are lending a hand to help those in need.  As part of the annual student food drive, kids have been collecting non-perishable items.  And Monday night during a wrap-up party, they collectively donated more than 45,000 pounds of food to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo.  Many of the schools hosted creative contests to encourage students to participate.

"So many of us have been working so hard and it's such a great cause.  I just feel great that we got a lot of people to help, we've been helping so many people, and got so much of the community involved," said West High School student India Lovejoy.

Cash prizes were awarded to the schools that collected the most pounds of food per student.
