MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA (KWWL) -- A new report finds smoking has decreased dramatically over the past three decades.

The study looking at adults in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area found the number of current smokers has been cut in half since 1980, especially among those with a higher income and more education.

And smokers are lighting up less, with an almost 50-percent drop in the number of cigarettes smoked per day.

While young men stayed consistent in the age they began smoking. The average age women start the habit has dropped from 19, to just under 18 years old.

Researchers say prevention efforts are still needed among young people, especially teen girls.
