Police will crack down on motorists bypassing gates

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa State Patrol says it will be cracking down this winter, on any motorists who try to blow through new automated closure gates on interstates.

The Des Moines Register reports that state transportation officials are piloting the new gates at interchanges at Ames, Mason City and Missouri Valley. The gates will block traffic to roads that aren't considered safe during severe weather. The gates are controlled remotely and watched by video cameras.

A State Patrol spokesperson says troopers will issue $195 tickets to anyone who tries to pass the gates.
