Class 3A: Mt. Vernon caps off impressive season with championship

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)- Mount Vernon hardly blinked in its dominant run through class 3A.

And even though West Delaware was able to do something that only two other teams did throughout the year, and that's take a set from the Mustangs, it wasn't nearly enough, as Mount Vernon defended its 3A title with a four set win 17-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-13.

"Oh, my gosh, we did it.  I can't believe that we did it," said Courtney Kintzel, who's headed to play volleyball at Northern Iowa next year.  "Just to know that we won two years in a row.  I was looking forward to this the whole season.  It finally came true."

"It's a great feeling.  All of our hard work finally paid off," said Ali Stark, the 3A all-tournament team captain.

Mount Vernon ends the season with a perfect 41-0 record. The Mustangs have also won 56-consecutive matches.

West Delaware, who stunned second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock the previous night, took the first set, 25-17 before the Mustangs took control of the match midway through the second set.

Stark knocked down a match-high 18 kills with 10 digs. Fellow all-tournament selection Amanda Platte added 13 kills while Sarah Ryan added 52 assists.

Mackenzie Harbaugh had 13 kills while Dani Sweet had 32 digs for the Hawks, who finish the year 41-4 with all four losses to Mount Vernon.
