Panthers clinch MVFC title with 38-14 win over Missouri State

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)- After a rocky start to the season, a young Northern Iowa Panther team has seemed to hit its stride.

And UNI seems to be peaking at the right time.

The Panthers handled Missouri State 38-14 Saturday, and in doing so clinched a Missouri Valley title, and a spot in the FCS playoffs.

"This football team, when we started off we had our bumps in the road early and they were young, but they had talent," said Panther head coach Mark Farley.  "What's really pleasing is this might be one of the more exciting ones that we've won over the years because of how we did it."

Carlos Anderson took the opening kickoff back 88 yards and seconds in, UNI had a 7-0 lead.

UNI continued to get big play after big play.  With the game tied 7-7, Tirrell Rennie found Jarred Herring for a 50 yard score, and halfway through the first quarter, the Panthers found themselves off to a 14-7 lead.

Right before the half, with Missouri State punting from its own endzone, special teams came up big.  Terrell McBride blocked the punt and J.J. Swain covered it up in the endzone just before the ball tumbled out of bounds.  UNI took all the momentum into the half up 28-14.

The Panthers would pull away in the second half with another Rennie to Herring hook-up.

UNI wraps up the regular season next Saturday at Western Illinois.
