Dike-New Hartford knocks off West Branch in 1A semis

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)- It hasn't been an easy road to the title game, but it's certainly been a rewarding one.

For the third time in the playoffs, Dike-New Hartford knocked out another unbeaten, taking down West Branch 21-14 Saturday at the UNI Dome.

The Wolverines got the scoring started when Josh Rekers found Royce Pool on a 13 yard touchdown strike in the first quarter.

But for every Dike-New Hartford score, West Branch seemed to have an answer.

On the next Bears series, Cade Jones broke through on a 66 yard touchdown run to tie things at 7-7.

The scoring pattern continued in the third quarter when Rekers went up top for Pool for a 33 yard score.  West Branch again answered with Jones a few series later in the fourth quarter, this time rumbling for a 61 yard touchdown to tie things at 14-14.

Dike New-Hartford would turn to its senior running back Eric Joblinske in crunch time.  Midway through the fourth quarter Joblinske took a sweep 13 yards to the paint to give his Wolverines a 21-14 lead.

Joblinske would deny the Bears' final attempt to tie in the closing minutes, breaking up the potential tying touchdown in the endzone.  It's the first time in eight years the Wolverines will play for a state championship.

"It feels wonderful," said head coach Don Betts.  "These young men have worked their tails off for this and they earned it.  I couldn't be happier for them."

"I can't even explain it because I grew up dreaming, we watched the teams play in the dome before when we were younger so we just wanted to do it this year," said Joblinske.

Dike-New Hartford will play West Lyon for the 1A crown.
