Two month salvage project ends in Waverly

WAVERLY (KWWL) -- Saturday marked the end of a two month-long salvaging project in Waverly.

Americorps volunteers gathered usable materials from about 40 homes that were flooded in 2008.

Those homes were part of the FEMA buyout plan, and are scheduled to be demolished within the next month.

The salvaged materials went on sale to the public Saturday.

"This way we can see instead of things just going to the dump," says Jim Hundley from Preservation Iowa. "that it's actually going to be recycled back into the community and fix up homes that were maybe flood damaged."

Preservation Iowa has not yet decided if the leftover salvaged materials will be auctioned off, or sent to a warehouse in Cedar Rapids.
