Girl Scouts collect coats for the needy

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Dozens of young girls are offering the coats off their backs to help others.

The Girl Scouts of eastern Iowa and western Illinois are collecting winter clothing for the salvation army.

75 Daisy and Brownie girl scouts helped out at Crossroads Center Saturday afternoon.

Not only did they fill a massive box with coats and other items, they also got to put on a fashion show with the t-shirts they decorated.

The regional director says she wants the girls to have fun, but to also remember that others are not as fortunate.

"We're hoping the girls learn how to give back to the community and realize there are children and families in need during this holiday season," says Joanne Wzontek.

Several area pageant winners, including Miss Dubuque, shared their talents with the crowd.

The theme of the drive was "The Coat of Many Colors", based on Dolly Parton's memorable song.
