Football Fans Spending Big Bucks

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- This month, thousands of football fans will descend on the Cedar Valley. In case you didn't see the banners, the T-shirts, or the yelling, we're right in the middle of state football finals.

"We're from West Branch Iowa, come to watch the West Branch boys play in the semi-final game," said Darlene Larew.

Making it to the UNI-Dome is a big deal for the team and for loyal fans. They'll travel across the state to watch their boys

"There's quite a few, I'd say two or three thousand people between the two towns. A lot of fans," noted Jon Gibbs.

Before and after the game those two or three thousand fans are celebrating -- and spending money. Like Larew, who arrived in town a day early.

"Picked up our grandkids and came up and spent the night, because it was late getting up and it's a long drive from West Branch," said Larew.

Even families who live nearby are treating their kids to a victory lunch.

"We're going to go to HuHot Mongolian Grill and eat some food," Gibbs said.

Between game tickets, hotel, restaurants, and shopping, Cedar Falls Tourism and Visitors Bureau said the championship games bring in about two million dollars. But Saturday's fans aren't adding up their receipts, at least not yet. Right now, their minds are focused on the field.

"You don't do it everyday!" Larew said.
