Tripoli returns to 1A Volleyball championship match

CEDAR RAPIDS(KWWL)--LeMars Gehlen Catholic gave two-time defending champion Tripoli all it could handle but, in the end, it was too much Megan Gilbert. Tripoli's junior all stater finished with 34 kills to help the top-ranked Panthers rally to a 20-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-12, 15-3 victory over LeMars Gehlen Catholic in the Class 1A semifinals Friday night.

The two-time defending champions will play Stanton or Janesville in the Class 1A finals Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Gehlen Catholic, behind the outstanding play of junior Steph Rohe, won the first two sets before Tripoli took command of the match, dominating the deciding set, 15-3.

Gilbert connected on 34 kills with just three attack errors. The junior also had eight blocks and 14 digs. Her six block assists tied a 1A single match record  (Heather Merchman, West Point Marquette vs. Tripoli, 2004; and Sarah Tjaden, WLVA vs. Grandview Park Baptist, 2006).  Bailey Kirchhoff also added 13 kills for the Panthers while Sara Hoppenworth had 59 assists.

Rohe had 16 kills with 18 digs for Gehlen Catholic, who finish the year 28-7.
