Health Plus: Nurse On-Call

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- Often when you or a family member needs medical attention, it's not during regular office hours. That's where Nurse On-Call comes in.

In Health Plus, how the service is saving lives and money for many eastern Iowans.

2,000 calls a month.  That's how many questions and concerns are pouring in to this small call center with a big assignment--tackle eastern Iowans' medical issues over the phone.

"They're the 1st line triage for the doctor who's on-call and the nurses will help determine if they need to talk to the doctor or if we can help them determine what care options they have that would be best for them to say go to the emergency room or to convenient care walk-in clinic,"said Nurse On-Call supervisor Patty Bohnstengel.

Nurse On-Call is operated through Waterloo's Covenant Medical Center. Any time, day or night, 24/7, the service is staffed with registered nurses waiting to talk with you.

"We do a lot of education. Parents who just want to know what to do for a fever or what to expect with the flu. Some times it's just that tired mom in the middle of the night that is overwhelmed and just wants some reassurance, a calming voice of a nurse, maybe a nurse who's also a mom who's been there, done that," said Patty.

The free guidance is so valuable to Kris Marmie, she used the Nurse On-Call 800-number during a trip to Las Vegas.

"I was sick after eating at an establishment in Vegas and very sick and didn't know what to do, didn't know if I should go see a doctor or not so I had my husband bring me my cell phone, called back to Iowa, called Nurse On-Call and talked to a nurse and she directed me to go to the doctor, appropriately so. Otherwise it would have ruined my entire vacation," said Marmie.

Nurse On-Call is celebrating 20 years of service.
