Waverly Veterans will unite under one roof

WAVERLY (KWWL)-- Veterans organizations in one Eastern Iowa town will be together under one roof. A multi-functional complex is going up in Waverly.

"I look forward to what we can do for the Waverly Veterans in the community. Its a big thing," said Jim Bean, Waverly Area Veterans Post Chairman.

The American Legion, AMVETS, Marine Corps League and VFW AMVETS Post 79 in Waverly will all be under one roof.

This idea for the complex came after AMVETS Post 79 was destroyed in the floods of 2008.

"Four pillars under one roof. To come together and build one complex so they can actually zero in on the needs of not only the current veterans, but the unusual and unique needs that we will see in the future, that out future vets are going to have," said Cal Corson, project volunteer.

Cal Corson recently retired from Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and is a volunteer for the project.

As a funeral director, he saw military funerals and came to appreciate the importance and honor of serving our country.

"I got to witness the most humbling of care giving I have ever seen in my life and that comrades burying their own," said Corson.

The new complex will go at the site of the current veterans post, 1300 4th St. It should be completed in a few years.

So far, the Waverly Area Veterans Post has raised three quarters of a million dollars toward the three and a half million dollar total.
