Waverly-Shell Rock shows their school spirit

WAVERLY (KWWL) -- Waverly-Shell Rock High School showed off their school spirit Wednesday Morning during a pep rally featured live on Today In Iowa.

Wednesday is the start of the state volleyball tournament. Eavon Woodin's volleyball squad is returning state champions and Woodin says she knows teams are gunning to beat them.

"We have had an X on our backs all year.  We have been rated number two.  We still have to show up and play our game." said Woodin.

The volleyball team will play Union Wednesday night.

WSR Students showed up right at 5 a.m. to show their school pride on the first day of state volleyball. Superintendent Jere Vyverberg says W-SR's school pride starts right away at the elementary level.

"All of the families are supportive whether it is fine arts or sports," Vyverberg said.

Volleyball isn't the only success story in Waverly-Shell Rock sports. The school had three state qualifiers this year.  Anna Holdiman was state champion in 3A and teammate Maaike Frerking placed 29th.  Daniel Huff was the sole qualifier for the boys squad and he earned all state honors placing 7th.

And the football team made it to second round play-offs, and lost to Decorah 7-35.  Coach Mark Hubbard says they are enjoying their successful season right now and will be hitting the locker room next week in hopes to improve on this season.
