UPDATE: Classes canceled Thursday at Cedar Falls High School

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Cedar Falls High School students will not attend classes Thursday, due to safety concerns related to a smokestack on campus.

Dan Conrad said crews were not able to complete work on the smokestack because of the high winds.   They will continue repairs Thursday, and hope to have it finished in time for parent-teacher conferences.

Superintendent Dr. David Stoakes says the smokestack, located on the west side of the high school, has a severe crack.  A school employee noticed the crack late Tuesday afternoon, and saw it expand rapidly.  Stoakes said people do not normally walk in this area of the school, so there is no way to determine how long the crack has been there.

The crack is about 20 feet up on the smokestack. Stoakes says if the smokestack fell, it would likely hit the school.

Crews worked Tuesday night to stabilize the smokestack which is connected to boilers inside the school.  They have brought in a crane to remove part of the smokestack.

Kids attending PK-9 schools will have class as usual Thursday.  At this point, CFHS parent-teacher conferences will continue as scheduled from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
