Woman attacked after car broke down

GRANT COUNTY, WI (KWWL) -- Two suspects are at large after reportedly physically and sexually assaulting a woman in Grant County.

The 21-year-old victim left the downtown Platteville area around 2 a.m. Sunday, after a friend's party, according Grant County Sheriff Keith Govier.

A couple of miles outside town on County Road B, her car gave her trouble.

"She had mechanical problems, something that she had dealt with before, and pulled off the side of the road to tend to that," Govier said.

According to the sheriff's department, that's when a car with two men inside pulled up behind her.

One man got out, physically and sexually assaulted her and left her lying by the side of the road.

"This is not a main road, this is kind of a back road that, at that hour of the morning, has very little traffic, so it had to be, most likely, somebody who was local who uses that area or had followed the person out there," Govier said.

He said it would've taken a lot longer to find the woman on the rural road near the border of Grant and Lafayette Counties had it not been for the 911 call center's ability to pinpoint the exact location of her cell phone.

"She was able to call. She wasn't able to speak very well, so we sent all emergency services to respond to her cell phone," Govier said. "If we didn't have the mapping mechanism, we would've had no idea where she was making the call from."

Govier said this shows the importance of carrying a cell phone and that an old cell phone without a service plan can still reach 911.

"If you aren't able to afford a cell phone, still get one that somebody else has used and is no longer using," Govier said. "In that kind of situation, they could call 911 and we would dispatch somebody out to help them."

The sheriff said officials took the woman to the Southwest Health Center, where she was treated and released.

Although Govier said the department is not yet releasing any details on the two male suspects, he does say anyone who may have seen two vehicles parked along County Road B east of Platteville early Sunday morning can call the Grant County Sheriff's Department (608-723-2157) or Grant County Crimestoppers (608-723-4271).
