Waterloo council votes to add time to yellow lights

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A new policy approved Monday night will increase the time of yellow lights in Waterloo. Experts say it makes roads safer.

City Council members voted unanimously Monday to add a second or two of yellow light time, before the stop light turns red.

Traffic Operations Superintendent Sandie Greco says the new timing method is to help reduce red light running. Many cities, including Waterloo, currently use a red light clearance time to allow vehicles to clear the intersection.

The new policy takes that red light clearance period and changes it to a yellow light, which is followed by one second where all lights are red. National traffic studies have shown the policy reduces red light running and is safer.
