DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Public Health says there's been a 33 percent increase in cases of pertussis or "whooping cough" this year, compared to the previous five-year average.
The department has identified 423 cases of whooping cough in Iowa so far this year.
That's compared with about 200 cases at this time last year.
Whooping cough starts with cold-like symptoms, but within a week or two, patients develop uncontrollable coughing spells.
