ISU loses overtime heart-breaker to Nebraska 31-30

AMES (KWWL) -- Iowa State gave it their best shot, but a failed 2 point conversion try in overtime cost the Cyclones as they lost a heartbreaker to #7 Nebraska 31-30 in overtime.

Iowa State scored on a 9 yard touchdown pass from Austen Arnaud to Jake Williams to counter a Cornhusker overtime touchdown to pull within one.  That's when ISU Head Coach Paul Rhoads decided to gamble, going for the win on a fake field goal.  Holder Dan Kuehl had tight end Colin Franklin open in the end zone, but a floated pass got caught up in the wind as Nebraska intercepted the ball to seal the deal.

That was the Cyclones last gasp in a game that included several heroics, including Grant Mahoney's career long 57 yard field goal to give Iowa State a 10-7 first half lead.  However they would fall behind by 14 in the second half after a pair of Husker scores, including a 29 yard interception return for a score by Austin Cassidy.

The Cyclones didn't give up, however, as Arnaud scored on a quarterback sneak early in the 4th quarter.  After Nebraska fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, Arnaud hit Alexander Robinson on a 13 yard strike to tie the game and force the overtime.

The loss kept Iowa State (5-5) from reaching bowl eligibility as their next opportunity comes on the road next Saturday at Colorado.
