IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Three Hawkeyes have done well enough in the classroom to be named to the ESPN Academic All-District Seven first team.
Senior offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde, senior linebacker Jeff Tarpinian and junior linebacker Tyler Nielsen received the honor from the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
All three will have their names placed on the national ballot for ESPN Academic All-America honors.
Vandervelde, a native of Davenport, picks up the honor for the third straight season. He carries a 3.46 GPA and is majoring in English and Religious Studies.
Tarpinian, an Omaha, Nebraska native, is majoring in Accounting and has a 3.58 GPA. He has earned academic all-Big Ten honors in each of the past three seasons.
Nielsen, a Management major from Humboldt, has a 3.56 GPA and has earned academic all-Big Ten recognition in each of the past two seasons.
Coach Kirk Ferentz had 17 of his student-athletes earn academic all-District and all-America recognition on 31 occasions in his 12 seasons.
