TAMA (KWWL) - Two people have died in an early morning house fire in Tama.

Tama Police Chief Dan Wilkens said that firefighters were called to 1001 McClellan Street at about 2:00 a.m. Friday.  They were on the scene for several hours, fighting the blaze with the help of the Toledo Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the blaze about 2 a.m. Friday. The home was destroyed.

Officials have released the names of the victims as 57-year-old George Davis and 54-year-old Diane Davis.  An autopsy reveals the couple died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remains unknown but isn't considered suspicious.

Several neighbors on McClellan Street woke up to an unforgettable sight Friday morning.  One of the first to see the flames -- a volunteer firefighter who lives right across the street,

"I seen it was pretty well fully engulfed, so I was going to call the fire department, but about that time my pager went off," said Ernie Buresh.

George and Diane Davis' next door neighbor said she called 911.  Around the same time, Becky Hutson's dad noticed the blaze and told his family to come outside.

"It was just orange with flames. You could see flames probably 20 feet in the air above the roof.   And just within a matter of a couple minutes the fire department was here.  They had some of their family members who came by and said... it was engulfed within a matter of minutes," said Hutson.

Friday afternoon a woman dropped off a bouquet of flowers.  She said she doesn't know the family, but she wants them to know, she's thinking of them.

Hutson said, it's the kind of thing you see in a small town like Tama.

"I'm still in shock, it's just hard to say, they were really nice people, what I knew of them, and it's juts a tragedy that it happened that way," Hutson added.
