State Volleyball Tournament to mark 20th year in Cedar Rapids


CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- When the first serve goes into the air on Wednesday, it will mark the 20th year that the Iowa State High School Volleyball Tournament has been held in Cedar Rapids.

32 teams and their fans from across the state will converge on the U.S. Cellular Center Nov. 10 - 13.

"The IGHSAU State Volleyball Tournament is a great boost to our local economy each fall. We look forward to welcoming them back to the Cedar Rapids area again this year," Marilee Fowler, President & CEO of the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau said in a written statement.

According to the CRACVB, more than 30,000 players, coaches, family members and friends come to Cedar Rapids during the four-day tournament with an economic impact of $1.8 million in direct spending expected this year.

They estimate that since 1991, the tournament has generated more than $30 million for the area.

Eastern Iowa teams competing in this year's tournament include Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Dike-New Hartford, Grundy Center, Iowa City West, Janesville, Linn-Mar, Mount Vernon, Tripoli, Union, Waverly-Shell Rock, West Delaware and Williamsburg.
