CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Black Hawk County Republicans came out with just one legislative victory Tuesday. Walt Rogers successfully ousted incumbent Democrat Doris Kelley.
"I'm honored to be able to represent the people of House District 20, so I'm going to continue to make the Cedar Valley a priority and see what we can do for our schools, for our teachers, for our economic development and jobs," Rogers said.
Rogers hopes to work closely with other newly elected Republicans in Des Moines in order to trim back state spending.
"Everybody knows we can't spend more than we take in. So we're going to fight hard for that," said Rogers.
But Republicans admit, it will still be a tough battle to improve the state's economy.
"A number of changes have to be made. And so the legislature has their hands full, and Governor Branstad has his hands full. So it'll be an interesting and somewhat challenging time," said Don Wood, chair of the Black Hawk County Republican party.
