Wheel of Fortune announcer Charlie O'Donnell dies

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. (KWWL) -- Charlie O'Donnell, best known as the voice of Wheel of Fortune, passed away at his home on Monday.

The 78 year-old was a disc jockey at KRLA radio in Los Angeles in the 1960's, an anchor at KCOP in Los Angeles in the 1970's, and for the last 28 years was the announcer for Wheel of Fortune.

Over the years, Americans heard O'Donnell's voice when the Beatles played at the Hollywood Bowl, when Pope John Paul II visited the U.S., and on awards shows like The Academy Awards and the Emmy's.

O'Donnell began his career on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.
