UPDATE: Cedar Rapids buildings evacuated due to gas leak

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Several businesses were evacuated and a bridge was closed in Cedar Rapids due to a gas leak on Tuesday morning.

Greg Buelow, spokesperson for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says a six-inch natural gas line was struck near the Casey's at 2nd Street and 8th Avenue SE. A construction company was working to install a fiber optic line.

Traffic was re-routed while MidAmerican Energy crews arrived to clamp the gas line. The construction crews at the new federal courthouse location, the Casey's and YMCA were evacuated as a precaution. In all, about 150-200 people were evacuated.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says there were no reports of elevated gas readings in any of the structures and that no injuries were reported.

The 8th Avenue bridge has also been closed according to the Cedar Rapids Streets Department.

Traffic returned to normal after the leak was stopped around 10:40 a.m.
