Counties get started early on early ballot counting

BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -- About a dozen counties across the state are already tallying up absentee ballots.

That includes Black Hawk County, where votes started being confirmed around 12:30 Monday afternoon.
Workers counted ballots in the city council chambers late into the afternoon.

Early ballot counting is also going on in Linn, Johnson, and Dubuque counties, just to name a few.

This head start is allowed under a change in the law that lets auditors go through absentee ballots the day before the election.  Each county has its own discretion whether to begin tallying the votes early.

Even though the counting starts early - results still aren't reported until after the polls close on election night.
