Labor agency appeals fine reduction in Atalissa case

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- An Iowa labor agency is appealing a judge's decision to cut a proposed fine against a Texas company accused of abusing and underpaying its workers.

You may remember, Henry's Turkey Service housed a group of mentally disabled men in an old bunkhouse in Atalissa. The men worked at the turkey plant.

The company is accused of 9,000 violations of state labor laws. Iowa Workforce Development proposed a fine of $1.1 million dollars. The company appealed and an administrative law judge cut the fine to $175,000.

Now the agency is appealing that decision.
