UI officials make pledge toward sustainable future

IOWA CITY [KWWL]  --Sustainability is a word that can be thrown around rather loosely, but the University of Iowa is showing its commitment to solving some of its environmental challenges.

''It's easy to be claimed to be green by making a few token gestures. The more difficult, and I think far better thing, is to weave a commitment to sustainability into the fabric of the University enterprise,'' said UI president Sally Mason.

UI officials have planted the seed for this sustainable future.  Outlining seven measurable goals to be achieved by 2020.  One such goal, is to be more efficient with energy use.

''Despite expected growth on our campus, we want to be using less energy in ten years than we are today,'' said Liz Christiansen, director of the UI Office of Sustainability.

This 2020 vision is all in an effort to reduce the university's carbon footprint, and it's also caught the attention of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

The EPA has invited the University of Iowa into its sustainability program.

As part of the agreement, the University of Iowa pledges to work to meet is 2020 targets, and in turn, the EPA will provide technical assistance and its expertise.
