"Final piece of the puzzle" is in place for post-flood recovery

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has accepted Iowa's plan to use $84 million dollars of recently awarded federal funding for disaster recovery.

The Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors is accepting a $3 million grant for a bridge project. They're working to replace what's known as the MacFarlane bridge on the Cedar Valley Trail.

Pictures taken just days after the floods show how the river rose six feet above the old rail overpass. The County Conservation Director, Vern Fish, said replacing this bridge is their final flood recovery project.

"We were really struggling with how to get this last piece in place, and this is just wonderful. I think we will finally have fixed all the damage from the flood of '08 when this bridge is whole," Fish said.

Fish added, this project will have a great impact on the economy in La Porte City. Local shops and restaurants lost a lot of business from bicyclers when the bridge closed.

Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are also getting a big chunk of that money.
