Waterloo Police announce dates for 2011 Citizen's Academy

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Waterloo Police Department has announced the dates of its next Citizen's Police Academy for anyone in the Waterloo area interested in getting an inside look into the department.

The eight weeks of classes will be spread over a four- month period starting on Jan. 19, 2011 and continue every other week. Each class will be 3 hours in length and will cover all aspects of policing as it pertains to the City of Waterloo. Graduation day will be on April 20, 2011.

All academy classes are taught by Waterloo Police Officers who hold a certification in the given course they will be teaching.

The academy is open to any citizen 21 years of age or older and any member of Waterloo's many neighborhood associations with a desire to strengthen communication between the community and the Waterloo Police Department. A criminal background investigation will be completed on each applicant and class size will be limited to 20 students.

To apply, get an application from the Waterloo Police Department at 715 Mulberry Street or at a neighborhood association meeting. Applications must be turned in by Jan. 3, 2011. You will be notified by mail of your acceptance to the academy.

The purpose of this Academy is to foster better communication between citizens and the Waterloo Police Department through education. The goal of the Citizen's Academy is to establish a better understanding of the practices and procedures of the Waterloo Police Department and to create a partnership with the community it serves. All academy graduates are encouraged to share their experience and knowledge they receive regarding the Waterloo Police Department with other people in the community.
