Puppets help students learn Character Counts

WATERLOO (KWWL)--Trustworthiness, respect and fairness, these are just three of the six pillars of character.

Barb Gregersen says each pillar of character is really just as important in teaching young students as math and science are.

"I think it is extremely important that children not only learn their alphabet, but they need to learn their ABC's of how to get along with people," said Gregersen.

Gregersen taught for 40 years. After retirement she decided to combine her love for ventriloquism with her love of teaching.

"I thought that working with kindergartners and helping them realize that there were practical applications for all those pillars of character and I knew children were fascinated with puppets."

Gregersen demonstrates the six pillars of character through examples with her puppets. She wanted to learn ventriloquism to better interact with students and became certified online.

Gregersen not only spends her time at Orange School, but she also volunteers at two pre-schools.
