Columbus wins playoff opener, 42-7, over MFL

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Waterloo Columbus advanced to the second round of the Class 2A State Football Playoffs Wednesday night, with a 42-7 victory over M-F-L Mar-Mac on a windy T. J. McLaughlin Field at Columbus High School in Waterloo.

The Sailors scored three times in the first quarter to take a 21-0 lead on three first quarter touchdown runs from Lamar Sayles. On the night, Sayles carried the ball 25 times for 118-yards and scored five touchdowns. 

Columbus Quarterback, Jay Schmit, got a terrific block from Tyler Roby on a 54-yard touchdown run to put Columbus a head 28-0 in the second quarter.

Sayles also had a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown, which put Columbus up, 35-0.

In the first half, Sayles scored on touchdown runs of 8, 23, 5 and 74-yards.  He added a third quarter touchdown to make it, 42-7, to start the continuous clock for the remainder of the first round playoff game.

The victory moves Columbus to 8-2 on the season and into the second round to face Dyersville Beckman next Monday night at Columbus.

The Beckman Blazers beat Clarion-Goldfield, 22-20, Wednesday in Dyersville. Beckman is also 8-2 now on the season for second year Head Coach, Gregg Hammann.
