CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- It was the Battle for 42nd Street Part 2 at Saints Field, but this time it was win or go home.
In week one of the season Xavier beat Kennedy 35-7, but since then, Kennedy has improved and won five of their last eight games including four straight to finish out the season 5-4.
Xavier had won six of the next eight and also won four straight to end the season at 7-2.
On a night when mother nature was throwing everything she could at the teams and fans, there was very little offense.
Kennedy got the early 2-0 lead when on Xavier's first punt, the snap sailed over the punter's head and through the back of the end zone for the safety.
The next score would come with 3:17 left in the third quarter after the Cougars blocked a Saints punt. After not being able to move the ball, Nick Bruns would come in and hit the 22-yard field goal to give Kennedy the 5-0 lead.
Xavier then gets the ball back and caps off an 80-yard drive that took the game into the fourth quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Andy Didio to Alex Ries. Saints take the 7-5 lead.
Then, with four minutes left in the game, Bruns comes in again to try a 41-yard field goal, but it bounces off the crossbar and out to keep the score 7-5 Saints.
Xavier gets the ball back, but on the first play of the drive, the Saints fumble the ball for the seventh time and Kennedy recovers it.
Working with a short field, Trevor Heitland caps off the drive with a short touchdown run. Kennedy would try the point conversion, but fail. Cougars take the 11-7 lead.
Saints would try one last drive but Didio's pass would be intercepted with under 30 seconds left in the game and Kennedy hangs on for the upset win, 11-7.
Kennedy will travel to North Scott Eldridge Monday night for the second round. North Scott Eldridge beat Iowa City West 31-0 to advance.
