WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Programs that help boost a mother's reading skills may be the best way to improve the academic achievements of her children.

A National Institutes of Health study of 3,000 families found a mother's literacy skill has the greatest impact on her child's success - more than income level or neighborhood.

Researchers say adult literacy programs could help overcome disparities in academic achievement between low income and affluent children.
