Improving juvenile detention

DES MOINES (KWWL)--  Efforts to reduce juvenile detention is showing signs of improvement.

Tuesday, Governor Chet Culver announced that since 2007, the number of youth placed in detention statewide has dropped 34 percent.

In Black Hawk and Polk counties, numbers have dropped by nearly 50% since 2007.

Those two counties are part of a National Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative.

It's also saving the taxpayers money, as the cost for a juvenile to be in detention is about $250 or more per day.
