Scientists reveal why some need 9 hours sleep, while others only 5

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA (KWWL) -- How is it that some people can get by with four hours of sleep, while others need a solid eight?  It could be in our genes!

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found people with the narcolepsy gene - even if they didn't have the condition - are more fatigued when they are not fully rested.

People without the variant spent more time in deep sleep and didn't wake up as often during the night.

Experts say screening for this gene could predict how people will respond to sleep deprivation, something especially important for people working night shifts or those who just can't get to bed at a decent hour.
